T's Birthday Party

Today I am on the Tampa Bay Mom's Blog talking about a recent 2 year old birthday that we celebrated.

We keep our 2 year old birthdays very small.  Even with only a few people, the person in celebration doesn't entirely get it, but does get easily overwhelmed.  I feel like in the next couple of years, we will appreciate that decision :)

Anyway, go check out some of the details!  They're out of this world!

Today

Today I am on the Tampa Bay Moms Blog talking about my latest habit breaking/making project.

If you know me, you can probably guess that the habit that I am in the process of breaking is my fountain coke habit.  4 days done!  Going, okay.  Haven't had one yet.  Still really want one though!

Go and see what is really working for me.  Sometimes it's the little things!

I go up at 1PM

Moms4Moms

Oh Mommas!  It has happened to every.single one of us.  We make a decision for our family and our babies and it gets judged.  Reprimanded.  Even looked at funny.

Every thing from the child's name, to their outfit, to how you feed them is critiqued.  Mommies are already prone to questioning their decisions and now on top of that, they're thinking about how those decisions will be looked at by other mommies.  Today you can go on the internet and be just completely blasted for, let's face it, sometimes very minor parenting details.

Here's the deal:

You're doing a good job Mom!

Today is #Moms4Moms day where we are celebrating Moms and spreading the word to "Love More, Judge Less."  You can find more about it on the Tampa Bay Moms Blog, the TBMB Facebook Page, or the CT Working Moms (partnering with the Bump!)

I was so excited about this!  I felt like I could have done it all day long!  I even went all Andy Warhol on it and made it into a Mommy Diptych:

What are your Mommy thoughts?  Feel free to comment below and let me know!  Spread the word and tell a Mommy today that she's got it going on!

More is Caught Than Taught

I was recently running with a good friend of mine (who is also the mother of a college student and a high school student).  We were talking about my boys and how C is incredibly verbal and T is really coordinated/athletic and so on.

Of course I think that C is also active and T is also intelligent, but she reminded me of some good advice:

"More is caught than taught."

In the context of the conversation, she was telling me to be careful about how I "label" my children.  She and I already have a close relationship where this kind of advice is appropriate.  She knows that I think that they are both amazing.  She also knows that they each have their own personalities and talents that should be showcased, but her advice was still poignant.

Working with students and then meeting their parents is always a lot of fun to me.  Just today (after having a conference with a student's mom) I watched the student use the same exact mannerisms as I had seen in her mom earlier in the week.  It was dead on.

I seriously doubt that the mom ever sat down and said, "now when you say this, put your eyebrows up like so."  But she learned it anyway.

This Tampa Bay Mom's Blog post (particularly the last paragraph, not by me 308) is a lot like this.  When we're teaching our children how to do life, we aren't necessarily (yes, sometimes, but not always) sitting them down to talk about it.  We are modeling life.

How we treat people, respond to crisis, respond to blessings, win, lose, pray, love our family members, give, react to bad drivers, carry ourselves, our self image, maintain eating and exercise lifestyles, how we treat the opposite gender.  All of these traits, and more, are caught, not (necessarily) taught.

These sweet children are watching us.  Every day.  They are truly soaking us in.  While we're teaching them, they are also teaching us so much about life.

I am so thankful for good advice and friends who are willing to give it.  (309) I am not telling you this today as a way to tell you how to parent, or even how to act in front of other people's children.  I am just sharing the recent aha moment that I had in my parenting, perhaps it can be an aha moment for you too.

And boy am I thankful for aha moments. (310)

So I Have This Friend...

... Who also happens to be a published author.  That is just fun to say.  I knew as soon as I was accepted to be a contributor for Tampa Bay Moms Blog that it was going to be cool for a multitude of reasons.

K.D. Brown is another wonderful contributor for TBMB, as well as a mommy herself.  In all of her spare time (haha), she happens to write children's books.  Two of her books have recently been published by Tate (gotta love that name!) Publishing and are coming out on the market!  Yahoo!

The stories are Four Lucky Leaves (377) which is being released on 11/19/13 and Hi, God (378) which is coming out on 11/12/13

                            Four Lucky Leaves                              Hi, God

I have personally read both of these lovelies and they are so darn sweet!  In the writer's (doesn't that just sound so official!?) words:

"I wrote Four Lucky Leaves to teach kids that our differences are what make us special. I wrote Hi, God to show kids that it's not important how we begin a prayer, just that we talk to God." (KD Brown)

I can totally see Hi, God being taught in Sunday Schools across America.  Hey, I think that I even learned something about prayer through the sweet tale!

If (when) you'd like more information regarding either of these stories then it, can be found on her blog at www.kdbrownwriter.blogspot.com. There's a "Children's Books" tab that outlines everything and a link to that page is http://kdbrownwriter.blogspot.com/p/childrens-books.html. They will each be $6.99 on paperback but can also be purchased as ebooks for $5.99!

If you're local, you can also look for her to do readings around town, all of that info will be on her sites.

Way to go K.D., thanks for being an inspiring mama!
